The Joy of Appreciative Living
Your 28-Day Plan to Greater Happiness in 3 Incredibly Easy Steps
By Jacqueline Kelm
Attaining lasting happiness requires that we enjoy the journey on our way toward a destination we deem valuable. --Tal Ben-Shahar
Jacqueline Kelm uses Appreciative Inquiry (AI), a management system developed by David Cooperrider in 1980, to guide the reader’s journey to greater happiness. The easy steps consist of daily, weekly and monthly exercises which involve “visioning” and journaling. The assumptions and principles of AI seem disarmingly simple. Visualization is central to the process because it fires the same neurons as action. Our choice of words and questions is also critical, because language creates our reality.
Ms. Kelm draws on a diverse group whose work and writing support the AI approach. Besides Cooperrider and many companies who use AI, she quotes teachers, writers and therapists, even cardiologist Dr. Dean Ornish. (“Joy is a more powerful motivator than fear.”)
Part of the daily routine is answering the question “What one thing could I do today, no matter how small, that would increase my joy?” After trying the plan for a month, your answers might surprise you!
